Summer: The Season of Immodesty

We live in an era unlike any generation before us. As our country falls from grace as being the most powerful nation in the world, it is also noted as being one of the most immodest. If our generation doesn't find a way to expose more flesh, it will find a way to push it up so that it looks perky and inviting. What makes me mention this? It's summer-the season when women love to bare all.

In one of my earlier journals, I wrote an article entitled "Modesty: The Appropriate Dress for a Christian Woman." I know it struck a nerve with some of my readers, because my final point was that women should wear skirts and not pants. But the most important point often went lost, because they weren't ready to make the change that falls at the heart of the issue.

Where does Scripture point out that women should not wear pants? Can't a woman wear pants and still be considered as modest? You see, it's not a pant vs. skirts issue; it's a nakedness issue.

Nakedness includes more than just the exposure of the strategic parts of the body, which we call our private parts. Both Ex. 28:42 and Isa. 47:2-3 mention the thigh and the leg as an inappropriate or shameful part of the body to expose. Isa 20:4 speaks of the buttocks, and Ezekiel 16:7 mentions the breasts in relation to nakedness. So as you see, these are just a few of the places we ought to cover up while in public.

Knowing what God defines as nakedness only causes us to raise more questions. We may struggle against the thought of covering up because it's too hot out, or the biblical text was written in an ancient culture, or that it is part of the old covenant. Sorry, I'm just telling you what the Word says. How you decide to interpret these Scriptures is on you - but you can't say you were never told.

I personally take it as direction from God on how a woman should dress. Since pants don't conceal the shapely line of the body where a man's eyes seem to travel, I desire to dress as our Plain sisters. They do take these Scriptures seriously, unlike the women of the world. I could continue by going into the history of clothing and show you how the world wars and the industrial revolution accepted the wearing of pants, and how it has gone hand-in-hand with the changes of skirt lengths and feminism, but perhaps we don't want too many facts. But I do suggest that you study how the clothing of women has evolved. (Sorry for the sarcasm. It's a touchy subject for me.)

I wouldn't be deceived by the teachings of this pagan generation. Society rejects the Bible as its authority, therefore modesty has also been devalued. Ladies, we are not being trapped into having more rules to follow. We are being set free to go against the grain in which the world has set up for us. God would not ask us to do something, unless it would benefit us by our obedience. There are plenty of benefits of dressing as a daughter of the King.
